There are two varieties of the breed: smoothcoats or longcoats. Longcoats are less common, and, what’s most interesting about them, they have a milder temperament. These animals are easy to care for and they make superb companions for elderly people. They are not recommended for families with young children, because they are extremely susceptible to fractures and head injuries. Their fragile bones are extremely prone to fractures. The molera usually closes by adulthood, but sometimes it remains open for the rest of the life. This is not a fault, but such dogs must be treated very carefully.

The dogs of this breed were popular pets and worshipped animals among the Toltecs and Aztecs tribes. The breed originated in Mexico and dates back to the 9th century. A soft spot on the head (molera) was considered to be a sign of purity. Today’s dogs of this breed have preserved this feature, but some lay people believe it is a sign of hydrocephalia. The dogs vary in weight from 1 to 6 pounds; pet quality animals may be larger. There is no such a type as so-called teacup or pocket-size dogs.
